Every destination has its own personality. Lake Como's is understated, the kind of place that doesn't need much staging because the setting already does the work. The Alps rise straight out of the water, towns like Bellagio and Varenna sit in terracotta and cream tones that suit a romantic, old-world wedding, and the whole landscape makes even the simplest ceremony feel monumental.
Beyond the architecture and the views, there's a practical case for Lake Como. Compared to some of Italy's more remote wedding destinations, Lake Como is easy to reach. Milan Malpensa Airport is about an hour away, and Milan Linate is closer to 90 minutes.

May through September is peak wedding season in Lake Como. Daytime temperatures typically run 22-29°C through the summer months, cooling slightly to the high teens and low 20s by September.
The gardens at venues like Villa Carlotta and Villa del Balbianello are in full bloom through June, and the lake becomes part of the day itself rather than a backdrop, with most couples building in a boat arrival or a portion of the reception on the water.

A few things we've learned only from planning weddings here:
June is the wettest month on the lake, so outdoor ceremonies that month need a covered backup built into the contract.
July and August are the two most-booked months for villas like Villa Erba and Villa Olmo, which means those calendars fill 10-12 months out, earlier than most couples expect.
September has nearly identical light and temperature to July and August, but villa availability opens up considerably, and vendor pricing tends to drop as the peak-season clears.
And because the lake sits below the Alps, afternoon cloud cover and storms are common in the summer months, so ceremony timing should always build in a buffer rather than being scheduled to the exact hour.

If you're open to shoulder season, April and October can also work beautifully for couples prioritizing a quieter, more private feel over guaranteed warmth, though you'll want to build in more flexibility around weather.
Our elopement with the clients pictured set in July, which made for weather that was warm but not too hot. We planned the ceremony for the mid afternoon specifically to avoid the midday heat and catch the golden hour light.

How To Get Legally Married In Italy
One of the most surprising things our clients hear from us, and something that doesn't get talked about enough, is that getting legally married in a country you don't hold citizenship in is actually quite a lot of work. It's worth understanding early, because the process moves on its own timeline and doesn't bend for anyone's wedding date.

As a foreign couple, you'll generally need a valid passport, a full birth certificate issued within the last six months, and what's called a Nulla Osta, a certificate from your home consulate confirming there's nothing standing in the way of your marriage.
Anything not already in Italian will need a certified legal translation, and if either of you was previously married, you'll also need to provide a divorce decree or death certificate, with some added timing requirements depending on your situation.

A fully legal civil ceremony typically means several separate visits to the local town hall, starting with a declaration of intent, followed by submission of your translated documents and payment of the marriage fee, then document verification, and finally the ceremony itself. Italian law also requires that all proceedings be understood by both parties, so if you don't speak Italian, a government-approved interpreter is mandatory, not optional. None of this happens quickly, and the exact timeline shifts depending on your nationality and residency status.
What most couples don't discover until they're already deep into the research is that there's another path entirely.
A large share of international couples choose a symbolic ceremony in Italy instead: any venue, any officiant, your own vows, written in your own words, paired with a short legal marriage back home either just before or just after. It isn't the legally binding version in Italy's eyes, but it hands you back everything the paperwork would have taken: total freedom over the venue, the officiant, and the shape of the day itself, with none of the consulate appointments or comune deadlines. This is the route we recommend to most of our couples, purely because it lets the wedding day stay a wedding day, not a bureaucratic errand with better scenery.
Some couples do still choose the fully legal route, either because it matters to them symbolically or because it simplifies things back home. Both are completely valid choices, and the right one really depends on your priorities.

Do we need to speak Italian to get married in Lake Como?
No. If you choose the symbolic ceremony route, your officiant can conduct the ceremony in English or any language you choose.
