Italy has a way of making people fall completely in love with its light, its landscape, its food, and its beauty. And so couples arrive at our inbox with the same wide-eyed dream: a hillside ceremony at sunset, a candlelit dinner, wine from a vineyard down the road (yes, really). As a company that has planned celebrations across this country for years, we want to tell you: the magic is absolutely real. But so is everything else. Here is what you actually need to know before you start pinning venues, vendors and all the unspoken things you need to know about your future Italian wedding.
Planning a summer wedding in Italy means planning for heat
Summer in Italy is gorgeous and genuinely extreme. In Tuscany, Sicily, and along the Amalfi Coast, temperatures regularly climb above 35°C through July and August. For an afternoon outdoor ceremony, that heat is not just uncomfortable; it can become the defining memory of the day, for all the wrong reasons.
The simplest fix: schedule your ceremony for 5 pm or later, when the light is golden, and the air finally relents. Provide handheld fans and abundant water for guests. And if you have flexibility with your date, September is Italy at its very best, cooler temperatures, fewer tourists, and the same extraordinary scenery.

Transportation logistics when planning a wedding in Italy

Italy is not a destination where guests can be left to figure out their own way to a hillside vineyard. In smaller towns, taxis are scarce, and rideshares are largely unavailable. If your venue is remote, and the most beautiful ones often are, transportation must be coordinated intentionally, not assumed.
Book a private shuttle service for your guests, particularly for day-of transfers between accommodation, ceremony, and reception. Build generous travel buffers between each event. Send detailed logistics to guests well in advance so no one is navigating unfamiliar roads after a long night of celebrating.

The paperwork is real, and it doesn't wait
English is widely spoken in tourist areas, but for vendors, local officials, and venue staff, that’s not always the case. This is especially true when it comes to legal documentation. Getting legally married in Italy requires paperwork that must be submitted well in advance and, in some cases, be notarized. The process is entirely manageable, but it is not something to approach casually or leave until the last minute.

If you want a legally binding ceremony in Italy, begin the paperwork process eight to ten months out. That said, many couples choose to handle the legal portion at home and simply celebrate the ceremony in Italy. It is equally meaningful, with considerably less bureaucracy.

Wine & beverages deserve early attention

One of the greatest joys of an Italian wedding is the food and wine. The regional variety is extraordinary. The reality, however, is that not every venue permits outside alcohol, and those that do typically charge a corkage fee. Coordinating deliveries from a producer to a venue on a tight timeline requires planning and local knowledge.
Clarify your venue's beverage policy from the very first conversation. If they have an in-house wine list, take the time to taste during your site visit; it is often excellent, and you may not need to source externally at all. If you do want specific producers, plan deliveries at least a week before the wedding.
Tipping culture is different here

In Italy, tipping is not expected in the way it is in North America. Service charges are frequently included in vendor contracts from the outset, and over-tipping can occasionally create confusion.
That said, when a vendor goes genuinely above and beyond, expressing gratitude is always appropriate and appreciated.
Review your vendor contracts carefully for service charges and gratuity language. If you wish to tip, please hand small cash envelopes directly to vendors at the end of the event.
For key partners, your caterer, your photographer, a handwritten thank-you note carries real weight in Italian culture.
