You have spent months, perhaps years, planning this celebration. The venue is booked, the dress is chosen, and the guest list is set. And then you stand in front of an open suitcase a week before departure and realize: no one told you what to actually bring.
Most couples search for what to pack for a destination wedding, but very few lists account for the realities of European travel, weather, and timing. Not the obvious things. The other things. The ones that only matter when something goes wrong on the other side of the world.

Power adapters for a destination wedding in Europe
Europe runs on 220-240V with Type C, E, or F plugs depending on the country. Your North American devices will not work without an adapter, and older electronics may also need a voltage converter. The mistake we see most often is couples packing a single adapter and then spending their entire pre-wedding morning waiting in a queue to charge one device at a time.

A portable garment steamer — non-negotiable

Your dress will wrinkle in transit. This is not a possibility: it is a certainty. And pressing or dry-cleaning services at European hotels routinely take 24 to 48 hours, when they are available at all. On a tight pre-wedding schedule, that window simply does not exist.
A compact travel steamer gives you complete control and takes up very little space in a carry-on. Conair and Rowenta both make excellent travel versions. Pack a small spray bottle for touch-ups as well. The most important detail: steam your dress the evening before, not the morning of. Fabric needs time to set and relax after steaming, and the morning of your wedding is not the moment to be hovering over a garment with a steamer and a racing heartbeat.
A wedding day emergency kit

This is the category most couples underestimate until something small goes sideways and suddenly feels enormous. A destination wedding emergency kit is one of the most overlooked parts of a destination wedding packing list, yet one of the most important. A broken earring back at 4 pm in a Florentine villa is not a crisis, unless you have no backup. A hem that comes loose during cocktail hour is not a disaster, unless you have no kit. The couples who move through these moments seamlessly are the ones who came prepared.

If you are wearing heels anywhere near cobblestone, which in Europe is almost guaranteed, heel caps are essential. They distribute your weight and prevent the sinking, wobbling, and potential injury that we have watched derail more than one beautiful moment.

Europe is extraordinarily beautiful and frequently paved in cobblestone. Uneven surfaces are not the exception; they are the rule. We have seen guests turn ankles and brides end receptions early because their shoes were worn for the first time on the wedding day. This is not the trip to gamble on new heels.
Wear your wedding shoes at home for at least a few hours before you travel. Enough that they have shaped to your foot, and you know exactly how they feel after three hours of wear. Consider packing a pair of elegant low block heels or refined flats for the reception and any outdoor portions. If your venue has grass or soft ground, heel caps are once again your best friend.

Tip envelopes, prepared before you leave home
Tipping customs in Europe differ from those in North America, but when a vendor has genuinely elevated your day, having a thoughtful gesture ready matters. The challenge is that on your wedding day, you will not have the bandwidth to locate an ATM, sort cash, do currency conversions, or track down individual vendors. The couples who handle this gracefully are the ones who thought about it weeks earlier.
Before you depart, prepare small labelled envelopes with cash in the local currency, one per key vendor. Even a modest amount, presented personally and directly at the end of the event, is received with genuine appreciation. Ask your planner in advance what is customary for your specific vendor team and region, as norms vary.
Your documents — physical and digital
Passports, marriage certificates, vendor contracts, and hotel confirmations all need to travel with you. Losing any one of them creates a problem that costs time, time you do not have in the days leading up to your celebration. This is the one category where over-preparation is genuinely impossible.
Keep physical copies of every important document in a dedicated folder in your carry-on. Save digital copies to your phone and to the cloud. Share a copy of your passport and key documents with a trusted person at home. If you are getting legally married in Europe, confirm with your planner exactly which original documents must be physically present and on what timeline.

A quality neck pillow and eye mask make a long flight genuinely restorative. Compression socks reduce swelling and fatigue on extended journeys. A refillable water bottle keeps you hydrated in airports and on the ground. And melatonin, taken thoughtfully, can help your body adjust to the time change before jet lag has a chance to settle in.
